The combined opposition on Thursday staged walkout from the National Assembly over detention of one of their leaders Makhdoom Javed Hashmi and inhuman treatment being meted out to jailed Yusuf Raza Gillani, the ex-speaker of the Lower House.

Several opposition lawmakers on points of order drew attention of Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain towards not allowing Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) leader Gillani to meet his family members on the auspicious day of Eid and continued detention of Makhdoom Javed Hashmi.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz was also present on the occasion and faced embarrassment when the opposition lawmakers staged walkout. The prime minister was sitting along with their benches, inviting the opposition leaders to attend parliamentary committee meeting.

Former finance minister Syed Naveed Qamar raised the issue of political victimisation and said former speaker Yusuf Raza Gillani has not been allowed to meet his family members.

He demanded of the government to conduct an inquiry in this case that why the former speaker was being meted out such an inhuman treatment.

Raja Pervez Ashraf of PPPP said that every prisoner was allowed to meet his family members on Eid, but Yusuf Raza Gillani was not given permission to meet his family members.

Being a former speaker of this House, Gillani has some privileges and the chair should take appropriate action on the issue, Raja Pervez demanded.

The PPPP leader insisted that Gillani and Javed Hashmi had been implicated in fake cases and both of them were being deprived of their basic fundamental rights.

Describing the incident of Gillani as worst human rights violation, he urged the speaker to issue a strong ruling on the subject.

Another opposition member from Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Malik Pervaiz demanded production orders of his party leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, who has been in jail for the last two years over the charges of revolting against the Pak Army.

Malik urged Amir Hussain to issue production orders of Makhdoom Javed Hashmi so that he could also contribute in the relief efforts for quake victims.

"As the government is calling for solidarity and unity in this hour of trial, therefore, it should allow jailed political leaders to mobilise public for relief activities," he emphasised.

Taking the floor Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) President Qazi Hussain Ahmed reminded the speaker of his obligations and termed the charges against Gillani and Javed Hashmi as politically motivated.

However, Amir Hussain in his ruling on the issue defended himself by saying he was fully aware of his responsibilities.

Responding to all the points of order, the speaker said the matter was sub judice, therefore, he could not issue ruling on such matters.

He also rejected objections of the opposition over the National Security Council (NSC), saying the council had been set up through an act of Parliament, therefore, the members should not make it controversial.

He then ruled out all the points of order, prompting opposition members to storm out of the House.
